Project overview

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has announced the delivery of Eon, the first fully electric harbor tug in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Owned by Kuok Maritime Group under the Coastal Sustainability Alliance, the 29-meter vessel built by PaxOcean marks a key step toward zero-emission harbor operations. With a 50-ton bollard pull, Eon uses ABB’s integrated electric propulsion system powered by a 3MWh lithium titanate oxide battery, improving efficiency and extending operational range. Classified by Bureau Veritas' Battery System Notation, the tug reflects growing regional momentum in maritime electrification. Following earlier projects like Voltai, Eon highlights expanding industry collaboration to advance cleaner, more sustainable port operations across Southeast Asia.

The NH3 Kraken is a tugboat retrofitted with the New York based start-up, Amogy's innovative ammonia-to-electrical power system which emits zero carbon. The tugboat, originally built in 1957, was initially powered by diesel generators and electric motors. The NH3 Kraken embarked on its maiden voyage along an inland waterway in New York in 2024, demonstrating a promising pathway to reduce emissions in the maritime sector.

Auckland’s first plug-in hybrid electric fast ferry will soon begin service on the Auckland–Devonport commuter route. This 32-meter vessel is designed by Incat Crowther and built by Q-West Boat Builders with systems integration by HamiltonJet, can carry up to 299 passengers and 20 bicycles. Equipped with range-extending generators and advanced electric motors, the ferry is designed for future hydrogen conversion. Expected to cut emissions by 750,000 kg annually, the project supports Auckland’s broader fleet decarbonization and modernization goals.

The E-Green (이그린호; Igeulinho) is South Korea’s first state-owned all-electric ferry in operation. She will be operated by the Busan Port Authority as a "port guide vessel." Built by Kangnam Corporation, the 39.95-metre catamaran is part of a broader fleet renewal aligned with South Korea’s objective of “net zero” emissions by 2050. E-Green will embark up to 88 passengers on guided tours where they will witness some of the operations at the Port of Busan first-hand. Powered by two 1,068 kWh battery packs, the ferry operates with minimal noise and vibration during operations. The ferry will be remotely monitored, enhancing operational safety and optimizing performace. A full battery charge will be completed in as little as 90 minutes, enabling approximately two hours of operation.

Trammo, OCI and James Fisher Fendercare successfully conducted an ammonia bunkering pilot between two vessels at a terminal in the port of Rotterdam on 12 April, 2025. This marks an important step in preparing the port for vessels bunkering clean ammonia. Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel, so no CO2 is released during combustion. The first ships capable of using ammonia as a bunker fuel are expected in 2026 or 2027.

Nexigen, the Dock Electrification Plan, is aligned with the Port of Barcelona's environmental sustainability goal, Strategic Plan 2021-2025. It is a key part of the Port of Barcelona's energy transition plan, which aims achieve 50% emissions reduction by 2030 and to be a carbon-neutral port by 2050. The plan also considers energy supply with certified 100% renewable origin, and a new 220/25 kV port substation within the Port of Barcelona that will be connected to the Cerdà Substation of Red Eléctrica Española (REE/redeia) (National Electricity Grid operator) that is currently under construction. The first phases of the plan became operational in 2024.
