This white paper is a call to action for the entire port ecosystem and Container Handling Equipment (CHE) value chain to accelerate towards a tipping point for Battery-Electric CHE. It examines how the port industry can accelerate the transition from diesel-powered container handling equipment (CHE) to battery-electric alternatives arguing that a market “tipping point” could be reached within 2-8 years, making BE-CHE more cost-competitive than diesel equipment. The paper identifies four key levers: scale, standardisation & modularisation, reducing charging downtime, and incentives from the public sector & customers. The paper emphasizes the requirement of collective by the entire ecosystem (i.e., operators, OEMs, port authorities, policy makers and customers) to bring the tipping point forward.
